ReadQuestions homeowners ask us
Should I call my insurance company or a restoration company first?
Stop the water, then call for mitigation, then call your insurer, in that order if it is an emergency. Policies require you to take reasonable steps to prevent further damage, and most adjusters would rather see drying start immediately than wait for an inspection. Report the claim the same day; the restoration contractor's documentation is what the adjuster will work from.
Will filing a claim raise my rates?
It can, and in Washington insurers may also consider claim history at renewal. For a small loss close to your deductible, paying out of pocket can make sense; for a loss involving drywall, flooring and drying equipment, the claim is usually the right call. Ask the dispatcher for a realistic sense of scope before you decide, and remember that not reporting a loss can jeopardize coverage if it turns out to be bigger than it looked.
Not sure whether to file? Call and ask.
